DELF – DALF French Language Exams

About the DELF and DALF exams

The DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française) and DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) are French language proficiency certificates delivered by the French Ministry of Education assessing the fluency of non-native French speakers. As internationally recognised qualifications across French-speaking countries, the DELF and DALF are designed for those who want to gain entry to universities as well as professionals who want to work in a French-speaking environment.

Cactus Language offers a number of DELF/DALF Preparation courses across France, which will prepare you for the exam, teach you the techniques you need to know, and will help you get the score you need.

The Exam Structure

The DELF and DALF French language exams are for adults, teenagers and children who need an official proof of their level in French for personal, professional, or academic purposes.

There are six different DELF/DALF exams:

  • DELF Tout public: for adults, from Beginners to Upper Intermediate (A1-B2)
  • DELF Junior: for teenagers, from Beginners to Upper Intermediate (A1-B2)
  • DELF Scolaire: teenagers, from Beginners to Upper Intermediate (A1-B2)
  • DELF Prim: for younger children, from Beginners to Elementary (A1-A2)
  • DELF Pro: for job-seekers and professionals, from Beginners to Upper Intermediate (A1-B2)
  • DALF: for adults and students who want to gain entry to higher education, Advanced and Proficient levels (C1-C2)

All six certificates have the same value, but are designed for different purposes and levels. Each certificate is independent: you don’t need to take all six exams. You should register for the certificate that is the most adequate to your level and goals. For more information, you can visit the CIEP’s website.

The exam itself is divided into four sections: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Depending on the exam chosen, each section will last between 15 and 60 minutes.

Each section of the exam is graded out of 25, and the marks are added to the total mark out of 100. You must obtain at least 5/25 for each section and 50/100 overall to pass the exam. Once you successfully pass the exam, the certificate is valid for life.
The diploma is valid for life.
The DELF/DALF is a general French proficiency exam assessing your French language skills. To study at a French university or for immigration to France or Quebec (Canada), you may need to take the TCF (Test de connaissance du français) instead.
The cost of the exam will vary depending on where you are taking the exam. The exam fee is usually between €100 and €200.
If you are taking a preparation course with us, the school will assist you with the registration process.
