Salvador De Bahia, Brazil
There's more to Brazil to Carnival, although if you can catch this week-long haze of samba, fiesta and unabashed hedonism it's probably quite an appropriate introduction to the country.

Come to Salvador to learn Portuguese and you'll come back with a lot more than a different accent. The soul, the sounds and the infectious beat of this northern Bahian city cannot fail to seduce you. Take its position for starters - overlooking a magnificent sparkling bay with miles of golden coastline stretching out both ways, this is the place where the Portuguese first landed over 500 years ago. There is also a marked African influence, stemming from the once-thriving slave trade and still present in Bahian daily life. Walk through the streets and you can't help but tap your feet to the rhythm of the music and indulge in the exotic delicacies sold on virtually every street corner.
