Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic covers the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola (La Isla Española), the first New World colony settled by Spain. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic ocean, east of Haiti, and its population is a striking mix of black, white and mestizo.

:: Welcome to Santo Domingo
Think Caribbean and warm turquoise waters, lush green palms and endless white beaches spring to mind. Think Dominican Republic and add tropical rainforests, tumbling waterfalls, dramatic river rapids and a few hundred species of exotic wildlife to the list. Now go to the south-eastern corner of the island and you'll top this off with one of the oldest, and most beautiful, colonial cities of the New World. Santo Domingo de Guzmán, if we are to give it its full name, was founded back in 1496 and its magnificent colonial centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To come here is a real history lesson under the sun. But the city's charm does not completely come courtesy of its past…Santo Domingo is also a young, thriving city and, with over 2 million inhabitants, has a range of amenities and entertainment on offer. That is, of course, if you don't head straight for those beaches we mentioned earlier…
