“I highly recommend the travel abroad experience because it is very useful to learn a language and to experience a new culture. The Spanish classes and the teachers were very good; everything was taught in Spanish so it is better to improve faster. Madrid is a lovely city with a lot to do especially in the evenings.” (Katherine Mitchell, November2009)
“This was my third time to book a course abroad... with Cactus; I already went to Malaga and I was in Madrid last year and felt like I want to come back. Cactus is a very friendly company and they provided us with very good information. I went back to the school I went last year because I really liked it. I really love Madrid and think it is a very safe and friendly city. The zoo is fantastic, the Retiro ark and Casa de Campo are relaxing and the Mercado San Miguel is well worth a visit.” (Jane Sweeney, August 2009)
"I have chosen the city and beach package in Madrid and Alicante. The lecturers, classes and the whole running were absolutely brilliant.
I can just say Madrid is an amazing city and Alicante is also a very nice place. I really liked the people, the Spanish culture and the whole way they live. I will definitely come back to Spain and carry on with Spanish.
I stayed in both cities with host families. As I stayed at two different places, the host families were different as well. However, both families were always kind to me. Especially in Madrid, I can tell I found my second mum (mi mama espanola) and I know I can come back and stay around her place whenever I want.
It is difficult to describe in details what I enjoyed most about my trip. Eeverything was perfect, indeed."
(Gabriela Hrobakova, October 2008)
"I was very happy with the school and classes .. I only wish I could have stayed longer! The location of the school and my accommodation was very good. I enjoyed being able to concentrate solely on Spanish for a whole month and receive thorough, intensive teaching."
(Mehrnoosh Ensan - February 2008)
"Classes took place in a charming old "palazzo". Madrid is recommendable as the city is very cleand and the public transport was excellent. The hospitality of the host family could not be faulted! The aparment was clean and the food excellent. Cactus provided an excellent service."
(Voirrey Stewart - November 2007)
"I chose Cactus because it was easy to find them on the internet with a clear, organised website. The prices were reasonable.
The school was clean and well-equipped and the classes were well-organised and very useful. I was never bored and never felt that anything was too much for me yet progressed quickly in Spanish at the same time. Madrid was beautiful and very convenient. The service on the metro was excellent and it was easy to get around. Lots of very good museums, particularly the Thyssen and the bars and restaurants were great.
I enjoyed going out in the evenings, sitting outside and eating and drinking and I enjoyed going to the parks in Madrid and just sitting outside."
(Alice Batten - September 2007)
"I chose Cactus because of the better website and the possible further study in South America.
The school was nice and very close to the accomodation. The teachers were very helpful though the first day instructions were entirely in Spanish so may have been hard for some people. Get the Metro from the airport and save yourself 30 Euros. Stay in student apartments if you want to experience the nightlife with people who know where to go. Go for more than one week!
I enjoyed meeting other students and actually coming back having learned Spanish."
(Stephen Thompson - September 2007)
'' This school was very good, very friendly and enthuastic, very patient and helpful. Madrid was a perfect place to learn spanish, in the heart of spain, confronted with the language everyday. I stayed with a host family and it was brilliant, our host was really friendly and inviting, made me feel settled and included in the house straight away. Great food, and student environment, minutes from the school and the centre of Madrid.
What I enjoyed most was meeting people from all over the world, learning a new language with helpful and supporting teachers and classmates, in a fun environment, although I do feel they need more activites planned for students.''
(Charlotte Hodson, July 2007)
"The teaching and teachers were excellent. They were very motivated, energetic and passionate about teaching and explaining Spanish. Madrid was a very enjoyable city. The people were friendly and helpful. Also unlike other cities it's ideal for learning Spanish as it wasn't as "touristy" like Barcelona and people did speak to you in Spanish rather than reverting back to English so there was plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the language. My host was very kind elderly lady. She made me feel very welcome and made generous portions for dinner and breakfast. The bedroom was basic but the accommodation was clean and safe and in a nice area of Madrid not too far from the metro station. I really enjoyed the trip. It was very motivating and gave me lots of confidence to use the language. It made me appreciate the benefits of learning a language"
(Panna Ali, June, 2007)
"I chose Cactus because the course seemed to be what I am searching for and also the prices are fare. The school is quite modern and the facilities are quite good. The teachers are really friendly and patiently and also the fact that it is so international gave me a chance to learn even more languages from students. I think I have gained a lot of enperience from this course and I would love to come back in the future or definitely recommend this school to the others. The town is nice and quiet and there are lots of people to help if you need any. I have stayed with a host family and it was great! All the members in the family are really friendly and the food was really nice as well!! I kept on improving my spanish whilst they were learning english and mandarin from me."
(Alanis Hong-Chi Ao, April 2007)
" I chose Catus because their website was very easy to use. The school classes were good, the teaching standards varied from teacher to teacher, but overall I felt that the standard was high. The rooms were bright with good air conditioning."
(Joanne Gregory)
" The school was very organised. Location is fine. Madid is a great place and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to follow a language course, because people will let you speak without starting in English. Attend the excursions organised by the school, because they are very interesting albeit at quite a high level. What I most enjoyed was exploring Madrid and its surrounding cities. Picking up the language again and practising it in the afternoons."
( Ingeborg Degooijer, October 2006)
“I had booked with Cactus previously and had thoroughly enjoyed the holiday so I had confidence that I would enjoy it the second time.
I thought the school was in a great location; within easy walking distance of the centre, and metro stations, but also slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Madrid. Classes were great and the teachers were so animated. I took the super-intensive course but the time flew by because the lessons were really enjoyable and we covered so much material!
Madrid is an absolutely fantastic city, especially if you like a buzzing atmosphere. There is so much to see and do, not to mention lovely and not overly-priced restaurants. It is essential to get into the madrileño way of life which is eating fairly late and then taking time to walk around the city by night. It is quite hot, but classes are usually at the hottest time of the day so by the time they finish, the temperature is more bearable.
I stayed in a family, who made me feel so welcome! They cooked me lots of traditional dishes and I also learnt more Spanish through chatting with them during some evening. Although I was quite a way away from the centre, it really wasn't an issue because the metro system is excellent.
I really did enjoy the classes and although the prospect of super-intensive classes was rather daunting, the teachers knew exactly how to make it fun and the topics we covered were so diverse (I was in hysterics more than once!). Also, my class was quite small so i got to know everyone very well outside classes as well. Nothing beats strolling around the city by night, because it's alive and buzzing. There are so many people out and about that I never felt unsafe or vulnerable, even when taking the last metro home!
I can't pinpoint anything that I didn't enjoy about the trip. The heat was rather overpowering at times, but the lack of humidity meant that I was still able to do everything I wanted to.”
(Nicola Lilley, July 2006)
"I booked with Cactus because the website was extremely helpful and informative, giving a professional impression and answering many questions. The booking was easy too. The classes were intersting and I felt that during the first two months I learnt very quickly. The school was good, staff were always friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was very pleasant. I enjoyed meeting a lot of new people from many different countries and the course very much encoureaged interaction between students which was great. The nightlife in Madrid is amazing and going out with both other students from the course and Spanish friends I knew before I came to Madrid was really good fun. I also enjoyed the climate in Madrid and the opportunity to go and sit in Retiro Park on a sunny day."
(Stephanie Geake, September 2005)
"I booked with Cactus because the website had provided me with sufficient information about the courses that I am interested in studying. Also, whenever I had any queries, Cactus have always responded to me efficiently, and I therefore felt safe to choose Cactus. The school was spacious and classes were animated. When I needed help they would not hesitate to help me out. The location of the school was brilliant. It was close to the metro, easy to find and transport everyday. I lived with a host family along with another 2 students. It was great fun that not only could I understand the Spanish culture better but I have also made some new friends! The mother usually cooked some traditional Spanish dishes, and it was just interesting! What I enjoyed most about my trip was the night life in Madrid.”

"I chose Cactus because of the availability of courses, and they were easy to deal with. I really enjoyed the school. The teachers were very adaptable and would change class according to what we wanted to know about. I loved the city. Lots to see and do. I would recommend that future clients explore smaller bars & tabernas as anywhere directly on/by key tourist sites was twice the price. I would recommend Museo del Prado, Museo de Reina Sofia, Parque del Retiro. What I enjoyed most about my trip were the local tapas bars, and I also found the people to be really helpful."
(Toni Adams, August 2005)
"I chose Cactus because of the professional and easy to use web-site, and the prices of course. Speaking to the Cactus staff and their up-to-date knowledge was very helpful. The school was cool and well organised. The teachers who taught me were excellent (Pepa and Marisa) and they adapted to the needs of the group. Fantastic course, can't believe how much Spanish I learnt in one week. Felt like I was totally immersed in the language and after just one week, felt confident in my ability to communicate. Accommodation and school were well placed. School was a pleasant walk from the main part of the town. What I enjoyed most about my trip were the excellent classes."

"The school was fantastic; central, airy, modern and with nice glass walls so we could see into other classes if bored with our own! The staff were exceptionally helpful, friendly and available. The best thing though, was the quality of the teaching. I was placed in exactly the right level, made very welcome and the teachers were absolutely superb. Every lesson was interesting. Madrid is a lovely city; the perfect city, in fact, which was why I chose it. Everything seems to work so well: little traffic, great bars, nice shops, few tourists, attractive people, lots of dogs but no dogshit.... And they speak 'proper' Castillian Spanish there, which is always helpful. What I enjoyed most was the teachers. and the ambience of Madrid''
(Chris Nye, June 2005)
"I chose Cactus because you offered more detailed information on the web and the courses, along with price, seemed comparable with other schools. The school was well situated and the classrooms were ample. The students were from all around the world, as promised. I was impressed with the teachers and their form of education. Madrid is fascinating. There are some trendy restaurants in chueca square. Plaza de Santa Ana has a fun hawaiin bar and at the other corner of the same strip is a place that has really good Sangria. Honestly, if you are adventurous and can spend the first couple of days walking around without a map, you really will get to know the city and people well - just be careful in some spots-common sense stuff. I stayed at San Lorenzo Hostel. It was four star, so it was a little nicer for a hostel. The balcony rooms are nice, but you might need sleeping pills if you want to get to bed before 4 a.m. - it's a little noisy. The inside rooms are very quiet. However, a lot of my classmates roomed in apartments with other students - this is ideal if you want to meet people right away. Spain is beautiful in general, but the people in Spain make the whole trip worth while but they don't eat dinner until 10:30 p.m"
( Erin Howlett-Avci, May 2005)
"I was booking at the last minute, and cactus could accomodate a beginners course on that date. Also, the website was nice and easy to use. I thought that the school, the classes and the teachers were excellent. The town is very nice. Nice weather, easy to get around, friendly people, lots to see and do."
(Philip Charles, May 2005)
"Excellent school, I enjoyed the most the course and friendly class atmosphere. The teachers Raimon and Ainhoa were very good and the class had the correct size."
(William Lloyd Griffith, April 2005)
"The school is in a very good location and facilities. I stayed with a very friendly family, very helpful who couldn't do enough for me. I recommend it. The transport was convenient -bus 202 direct from the door of the building to the language school. thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Madrid. The classes were at the right level for me (advanced intensive course with classes on Spanish culture). The teachers were very good at their jobs and extremely helpful. The quality of the teaching was very high and challenging. It suited me perfectly. The book enabled lots of grammar and oral work ; it was a very good resource. The group of students I was studying with was very friendly too. I have learnt a lot. This course was value for money as it was a real intensive course. I also appreciated Elvira´s help in London for enrolling on the course, taking into account that I have enrolled very late; thanks again Elvira!"
Michèle van Veerssen, April 2005)
"The school was excellent and the teachers very good. The one hour culture class every day I think is too much and maybe should only before the 1st one or 2 days. Madrid was a great city and I thoroughly enjoyed my time and travels. I would definitely recommend to my friends. I stayed with a host lady who was superb. She made my stay so enoyable as she was kind, pleasant, helpful and made be feel like it was my second home. Cactus covered everything and had all the information I needed also when I had to arrive a day later and it was so good that the communication worked and my host lady was informed I would arrive a day late."
(Nina Stanley, March 2005)
"The school was quite good, in a good location. It was very nice. The classes were good and kept quite small which is more teacher to student time. Which is obviously better for the student. The teachers were good, helpful and patient. Madrid is a great city, big, fun and lots to do. Oh and the nightlife is great fun. My accom was nice, I stayed with a very nice lady who couldn't speak english which was to my benefit. Although she lived a little bit far away from the school and the center. Cactus was the best option for me, it has a good reputation."
(Samantha Hamilton, December 2004)
"muy bien! I thoroughly enjoyed my week in Madrid and have plenty of feedback. I found the standard of tuition very good- what was quite interesting was that the teachers English was not particularly good-this in fact was good news as it forced me to explain what I was saying in spanish. My host family were great- I was very well looked after and learnt quite a few Spanish words from Carmen. The only other point I would make is that I found 5 hours lessons on the trot very hard work. It would have been better to have had say a 15 minute break between the 2 hour lessons. Kind Regards".
Paul Winter (April 2004)
"My experience in Madrid was great, the school and level of tuition were first class, and it has certainly helped my Spanish (although I've still got a long way to go...). The apartment was fine, not exactly the worlds cleanest place, but I guess it could have been worse. Madrid itself was a fantastic city, and I managed to explore quite a bit of it. Thank you very much for organising it at such late notice for me. All best wishes,"
Hugo Bieber. (March 2004)
"The week I spent in Madrid learning Spanish was fantastic. I was (am) a complete beginner but I picked up so much in just a week. It has really inspired me to carry on and I am now going to Spanish classes. The college was great - modern and very friendly. The excursions they organised were wonderful."
(Tracy Derwent)
"I am just writing to let you know that I enjoyed very much the time I spent in Madrid. I found the course to be very useful and whilst it was unusual for a student to only be staying for one week, I had no problems fitting in whatsoever (both from a learning and social viewpoint). I do feel that I learnt a lot in a short space of time, not only from a grammatical point of view but also through being forced to speak to fellow students in a 'safe' environment. Unfortunately from a social viewpoint, as my stay only lasted for a week I did not manage to attend any of the social events as I tended to spend the evenings with some friends who live in the city. The feedback I got from fellow students however was that the smaller social gatherings run by the school itself were much better than the larger events organised for all foreign students based in Madrid.
The accomodation was comfortable and welcoming. I did spend some time talking to Mrs Mendez even though we tended to revert to french as a common language (she did not speak english too well). The other students were friendly and quiet. I enjoyed visiting Madrid, but felt that I would prefer to take the opportunity to visit other spanish cities before returning.
It was unfortunate that my visit was so short, and would certainly benefit from a stay lasting at least one month. However, this is unfortunately out of my hands as I would have a hard time persuading the boss to agree!! Finally, thank - you very much for arranging my visit. I shall certainly consider your agency again for future language learning holidays and will pass on your details to fellow students at courses I am attending in the UK."
(Paul Vaughan)
"I wanted to write you really quick to thank you for setting up my trip to Spain to learn Spanish. I learned a lot at the school and I met a wonderful group from Texas also which was very nice. I told them how I got to go to the school through your program and they were very impressed with everything. I tried very hard and when I went to Barcelona I really got a chance to see what I learned and it was great!! I have also attached the questionnaire that you sent me. Thank you again for everything, I had a great time and learned a lot!! I will be sure to go through your company again and recommend you to friends and family if they are looking to do something like I did. that are good. Thanks again!"
(Mara Giampaola)
"Thank you. I was planning to call them within the hour. Spain was a delight. Rima Zargarian is now a member of my family. The school couldn't have been better. Let's hope Rome is a repeat experience."
(Don Stoutenborough)
"Thank you so much for the email, I got back last weekend and I am delighted to say that the course, accomadation and everything was faultless, it was so much fun and incredibly worthwhile. Cactus Languages will be highly recommended!! Muchas Gracias.. Sophiexxx"
(Sophie Jones, April 2004)
"Thank you for e-mailing me. Yes, the course was great, far better that my expectations. I did not expect to learn a great deal in one week, but I did learn how languages should be learnt and how to study now and tackle the grammar, etc. But even so I felt that after one week I learnt a lot. The accommodation with Maria se Parraga was very nice, being in the centre of Madrid by Reitro Park was especially good as it gave me a good chance to explore Madrid. I do plan to do another course later in the year, probably in Seville. Will contact again later in the year when I am ready for another Spanish course. Best Regards"
(Claire Gripton - March 2004)
"School was pretty good and competent. The only issue is that it is fairly expensive compared to others. I find the class max of 9 to be too much as it is now. Having said that teachers are good and interested in this subject. Accomodation is great, real close to the school which is a bonus.
I booked the school for another 2 weeks as I didn't want to interrupt my study programme. I am staying in Madrid for the forseeable future. If you know of any other school for "long term" foreigners like me then I would be interested in going there as well. Regards, Patrick"

A beautifully renovated school, with large windows and a spacious interior patio creating a peaceful haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Your classes will take place in one of the 40 modern and fully-equipped classrooms but, like most students, you will probably want to hang around afterwards to make full use of the internet room, video facilities, library and spacious common areas. There is an excellent team of highly trained teachers and, with a mix of both Spanish and foreign students, the atmosphere here is truly international.
The school is situated in a lively street within walking distance, or a short metro ride, of Madrid's many attractions.
Academic credits - the language programmes we offer in Madrid are approved by the University of Southern Mississippi ('USM'). USM is a fully accredited comprehensive state university. USM's international and foreign language programmes are nationally recognised for their excellence. Students can earn up to 12 hours of undergraduate or 9 hours of graduate credit for their enrolment in our Spanish language programmes. You must complete a 3-week immersion programme with at least 20 hours of class time per week (not including activities) to earn three hours of academic credit. Please visit our website at www.cactuslanguage.com for further details.
Out and About
Being the home of Spain's royal family a reasonable starting point would be the Palacio Real, but it's in art that Madrid really excels itself with the famous Museo del Prado and Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. Sunday is then family day so why not join the madrileños as they head for ice cream in El Retiro park. It's also well worth the day trip to the historical towns of Toledo or Segovia - where else will you be offered suckling pig so tender it is cut with a plate? Also on the outskirts is the monastery of El Escorial, but remember to look up or you'll miss the Valley of the Fallen, a stoic and somewhat controversial reminder of General Franco. |

All course materials and a welcome pack are included in the price. However if you change levels while at the school you will need to buy the next book for 15 euros.
Please note that due to Madrid's increasing popularity and corresponding shortage or rental properties, accommodation can occasionally be problematic. This means that we will always be able to find you accommodation but it may not be of the same standards as in other Spanish destinations.
It's extremely hot during mid-summer, in July and August. The rest of the year the climate is generally temperate. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn. August is the busiest month, while May and October are the best times for both ideal weather and fewer crowds. Madrid and the high central area can get very cold during winter.
The School is accredited by USA-Universities, Instituto Cervantes, CEELE (University of Alcala) and Spanish Chamber of Commerce, the Swedish CSN and the German BILDUNGSURLAUB.
ENFOREX is also a member of the following national and international organisations: FIYTO, BELTA, NAFSA, ALTO, UNIÓN LATINA, AEEM, AMACFE & AECAE
USA, Germany, Brasil, French, East Europe, Italy, South Africa, Japan, Netherlands, Scandinavian countries, UK, Canada, , Korea, Taiwan, China, Switzerland, Iceland
During the week the school organises afternoon activities and cultural excursions - such as visits to museums, churches, city cathedrals or the historical areas of the Spanish capital - which are usually free of charge and within walking distance from the school. Through these excursions, students will discover the beautiful city of Madrid.
The school also offers full day trips to other cities in Spain, which are located approximately at 1-3 hours distance from Madrid. Most of them have been declared World Heritage cities by Unesco. In that way, students will have the opportunity to discover intriguing towns such as: Segovia, Toledo, Avila, and Alcalá de Henares.
In addition they also offer weekend trips to other cities of Spain. The main objective is to make the process of learning Spanish as successful as possible.

| Staying with a host family is without doubt one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture of a country. They may not speak your language but that's all part of the learning experience - and fun! All host families are carefully selected and located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room and receive meals as stated (bed & breakfast, half board or full board). Most families can cater for special dietary requirements, bed linen is provided, and laundry service and towels are sometimes included. A key is given to the outside door so you can come and go as you please. If for any reason you do not wish to eat at home please just notify the family in advance. It's great to experience the different cultural aspects of living with a family, such as different food and meal times, but please respect these too. We also suggest that you take some pictures of your family, friends and home as these can act as useful props for discussion. |

| A shared apartment gives you the opportunity to live with foreign, and/or native, students in a friendly and independent environment. Just remember that you may have to make an effort to practise the language outside class! Apartments are located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room, or double room if travelling with a friend, and share the kitchen, bathroom and living area with the other students. A deposit may be required upon arrival, and bed linen is provided but towels are not. Please remember that apartments abroad, and especially those in Europe, may not be of the same standard as in your home country: they are clean but they can be small and basic. Please also note that shared apartments fill up quickly during the summer, when there tends to be a higher number of younger students. |

| A student residence can vary in size depending on location and availability. In some cases a residence is spread over one or more floors of a large building, accommodating students of all ages and nationalities, and in others it's more of a traditional, house-type environment. Residences are usually located in the city centre and are within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room, or double room if travelling with a friend, and receive meals as stated if offered in your location (bed & breakfast, half board or full board). The kitchen, bathroom and living areas are shared with other students, but in selected locations you may have your own bathroom. We recommend this type of accommodation if you're looking for independence whilst staying in a truly international environment. |
