Russian General Course (20 lessons per week)
Moscow School

This is the most popular group course and runs throughout the year at all levels from beginners to advanced. Classes focus on the four main language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, combined with aspects of local culture. This course is recommended for those who wish to learn the language at a steady pace and attracts students of all ages and backgrounds. Classes usually take place between 10am and 2pm Monday to Friday.

Long-term courses: please let us know if you intend to study for 24 weeks or longer, if your period of study will include some or all of the summer, as you may be entitled to a lower course price.

Please note that Beginners are advised to be familiar with the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet as this will not be taught in the lessons.

Activities

A number of activities are available alongside this course, including the sample activities listed below. Please note these may vary and be chargeable.

We offer a varied cultural programme, which we change every two weeks (City tours, museum excursions, visits to the historical parks and palaces in the suburbs). Further, we have a theatre ticket booking service and a domestic travel desk. Local Extras: Russian Theatre – classical Russian plays; Friday Cocktail Parties, watching Russian movies. Students receive a substantial discount at the Rebook Sport Club.

The club offer over 40 different individual and group exercise programs (step, slide, cycle, core training, wellness, various dance-based classes, yoga, pilates and many others.

Single, Breakfast + Dinner

Staying with a host family is without doubt one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture of a country. They may not speak your language but that's all part of the learning experience - and fun! All host families are carefully selected and located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room and receive meals as stated (bed & breakfast, half board or full board). Most families can cater for special dietary requirements, bed linen is provided, and laundry service and towels are sometimes included. A key is given to the outside door so you can come and go as you please. If for any reason you do not wish to eat at home please just notify the family in advance. It's great to experience the different cultural aspects of living with a family, such as different food and meal times, but please respect these too. We also suggest that you take some pictures of your family, friends and home as these can act as useful props for discussion. Students can choose single or double , half board or full board. The family provides bed linen. Laundry service is available once a week. Special meals can be provided for students with special needs. Full-board is offered at the weekend.

Please note that host families can be located as much as 45-60 minutes away from the school on public transport.

Shared Apartment

Single, No Meals

A shared apartment gives you the opportunity to live with foreign, and/or native, students in a friendly and independent environment. Just remember that you may have to make an effort to practise the language outside class! Apartments are located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room, or double room if travelling with a friend, and share the kitchen, bathroom and living area with the other students. A deposit may be required upon arrival, and bed linen is provided but towels are not. Please remember that apartments abroad, and especially those in Europe, may not be of the same standard as in your home country: they are clean but they can be small and basic. Please also note that shared apartments fill up quickly during the summer, when there tends to be a higher number of younger students.

The School - Moscow

The school is located in a central part of the city, a short walk from the Belorussian Railway Station, terminus for trains from Berlin and Warsaw. The school premises feature state of the art technology (including wireless internet), and will soon be equipped with a library and self-access centre.

The premises of the school are on the ground floor in a building that belongs to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Most of the office space there is used by foreign diplomats and accredited correspondents of the international press, some of whom take language courses there. The closest metro station can be reached in less than five minutes on foot. Cafés, restaurants and shops are within easy reach.

The school is able to provide college credits for students from the USA so that their Russian Language course can form part of their University course.

Best Time to Go

Moscow lies on approximately the same latitude as Edinburgh, but due to its location far from the sea and in the midst of a large continental landmass, the Russian capital's climate is considerably more extreme. Summers are hot and winters very cold by Western European standards. Temperatures range from +22-28°C during August to -10°C or even -20°C during January, usually the coldest month of the year.
