Russian Combined Course (20 group + 5 individual lessons per week)
St Petersburg (Nevsky Prospekt) School

This course is ideal for combining the experience of learning the language in a group whilst at the same time receiving individual classes. The group classes in the morning encourage student interaction and help you improve your practical communication skills. The individual classes in the afternoon allow you to work on areas you may feel need extra practice or which are of particular interest to you. The students who usually take this type of course are generally highly motivated to learn as much as they can in the shortest time possible. Classes take place Monday to Friday.

Please note that Beginners are advised to be familiar with the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet as this will not be taught in the lessons.

Activities

A number of activities are available alongside this course, including the sample activities listed below. Please note these may vary and be chargeable.

We offer a varied cultural programme, which we change every two weeks (City tours, museum excursions, visits to the historical parks and palaces in the suburbs). Further, we have a theatre ticket booking service and a domestic travel desk.

Local Extras: Russian music folklore and Russian folk handicrafts; Friday Cocktail Parties, boat trips, watching Russian movies. Students receive a substantial discount at the Rebook Sport Club.

The club offer over 40 different individual and group exercise programs (step, slide, cycle, core training, wellness, various dance-based classes, yoga, pilates and many others.

The school organises several extremely popular joint events (for instance, boat trips) for our Russian and foreign students to encourage their language and cultural exchange.

Host Family

Single, Breakfast

Staying with a host family is without doubt one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture of a country. They may not speak your language but that's all part of the learning experience - and fun! All host families are carefully selected and located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room and receive meals as stated (bed & breakfast, half board or full board). Most families can cater for special dietary requirements, bed linen is provided, and laundry service and towels are sometimes included. A key is given to the outside door so you can come and go as you please. If for any reason you do not wish to eat at home please just notify the family in advance. It's great to experience the different cultural aspects of living with a family, such as different food and meal times, but please respect these too. We also suggest that you take some pictures of your family, friends and home as these can act as useful props for discussion. All families are within a 20-35 minute journey (walking or bus) from the school. The family provides bed linen. Laundry service is available once a week. Special meals can be provided for students with special needs. Full-board is offered at the weekend.

Shared Apartment

Single, No Meals

A shared apartment gives you the opportunity to live with foreign, and/or native, students in a friendly and independent environment. Just remember that you may have to make an effort to practise the language outside class! Apartments are located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room, or double room if travelling with a friend, and share the kitchen, bathroom and living area with the other students. A deposit may be required upon arrival, and bed linen is provided but towels are not. Please remember that apartments abroad, and especially those in Europe, may not be of the same standard as in your home country: they are clean but they can be small and basic. Please also note that shared apartments fill up quickly during the summer, when there tends to be a higher number of younger students.

The School - St Petersburg (Nevsky Prospekt)

This school has recently moved to fantastic new premises off Nevsky Prospekt between the Russian Museum, the Mikahilovsky Zamok (built by Pavel I, son of Catherine the Great), the circus and near two attractive parks. The area offers some of the finest examples of St.Petersburg architecture and is close to the Fontanka and Neva rivers. The closest metro station (Nevsky Prospekt/Gostiny Dvor) is a five minute walk away. The school facilities in St.Petersburg include fifteen classrooms, a library with a large choice of Russian newspapers and a fine cafeteria (with freshly prepared hot and cold meals). The school is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, provides PC workstations and offers full, free internet access to all its students.

The school's administration office is also very centrally located close to the metro station Ligovsky Prospekt and is easy accessible from any point in the city. Bars, restaurants but also many theatres are within walking distance.

The school is able to provide college credits for students from the USA so that their Russian Language course can form part of their University course.

Best Time to Go

St Petersburg's climate is mild compared to that of the more inland areas of Russia. The city is on the Baltic Sea, which makes winters relatively mild, but summers are not particularly hot either. Temperatures in winter can drop to minus 20ºc and in summer can exceed 20ºc. In the summer (July) you can see the famous spectacle known as White Nights where the sun doesn't drop below the horizon and in winter you can walk across the river on the frozen ice!
