Italian Language & Cooking Course (20 + 6 lessons per week)

This course combines an Italian General Course with Cooking classes in the afternoons. Italian lessons are in the mornings, 5 days per week, and the cooking lessons are in the afternoons, 4 days per week. The cooking programme is held in Italian, in conjunction with the prestigious Scuola di Arte Culinaria Cordon Bleu of Florence, and a minimum of elementary level in Italian is required. During each practical cooking class, two different recipes will be explored. The teacher will first introduce the subject and explain in detail the various steps of the preparation. Students will have the opportunity to participate 'hands on' during the lessons, thus gaining the experience to repeat the recipes at home. Each lesson will be followed by the most important part of any cooking session, the tasting!
Each student will receive a complimentary folder with class recipes and their own apron.
There are 4 main topics that will be covered in different lessons:
Tuscan Cuisine:
Each week a new typical Tuscan recipe will be explored. The instructor explains the importance of the essential ingredients of Tuscan cuisine and begins preparing recipes with students.
Baking & Pastry:
Each class will focus on regional specialities of Italian baking and pastry. In celebration of traditional festivities, this class may include typical desserts of Italian feasts.
Regional Cuisine:
Each week a different region of Italy will be explored. The instructor will talk to students about the specific ingredients and specialities of each region, and notions of regional economy and agriculture will be discussed.
Wine Appreciation:
The instructor guides students through a tasting of white, red and dessert wines, explaining the various characteristics and techniques involved in wine tasting. Attention is given to different varieties of grapes and their unique characteristics.
Please note that this course is not available in August as the Culinary Arts school is closed.

Host Family
Staying with a host family is without doubt one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture of a country. They may not speak your language but that's all part of the learning experience - and fun! All host families are carefully selected and located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room and receive meals as stated (bed & breakfast, half board or full board). Most families can cater for special dietary requirements, bed linen is provided, and laundry service and towels are sometimes included. A key is given to the outside door so you can come and go as you please. If for any reason you do not wish to eat at home please just notify the family in advance. It's great to experience the different cultural aspects of living with a family, such as different food and meal times, but please respect these too. We also suggest that you take some pictures of your family, friends and home as these can act as useful props for discussion.

A private apartment is the ideal accommodation if you are looking for complete independence and a little more comfort during your stay. Apartments are furnished and come fully equipped with kitchen and bathroom. We offer a range of options, ranging from studios to 1 or 2-bedroom apartments, depending on your requirements and budget. Private apartments can be located in any part of town but will be within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. A deposit may be required upon arrival, and electricity and water expenses are sometimes extra. Please give us as much notice as possible if booking a private apartment.

A shared apartment gives you the opportunity to live with foreign, and/or native, students in a friendly and independent environment. Just remember that you may have to make an effort to practise the language outside class! Apartments are located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room, or double room if travelling with a friend, and share the kitchen, bathroom and living area with the other students. A deposit may be required upon arrival, and bed linen is provided but towels are not. Please remember that apartments abroad, and especially those in Europe, may not be of the same standard as in your home country: they are clean but they can be small and basic. Please also note that shared apartments fill up quickly during the summer, when there tends to be a higher number of younger students. This form of accommodation is only available for a minimum period of two weeks.

The School - Florence
The school is situated in the heart of Florence, just a few minutes from the historical centre of Florence. This gives you the perfect opportunity to explore this unique city with its charm and rich artistic heritage. It is located in a quiet street next to the main railway station. It occupies three floors of a 19th century building and comprises 17 comfortable, well equipped and air conditioned classrooms with audio and video equipment. There is also a small garden, free internet access and excellent social programme and great accommodation all within walking distance to the school.
