Located in the centre of Hamburg the school is one of the largest and oldest language schools in Germany - it was founded in 1952. Although it teaches 19 languages in total, teaching German as a foreign language is its main focus. Right in the heart of Hamburg, in the old and peaceful pedestrian zone known as 'Colonnaden', which is very close to the city centre and easily accessed by bus and train. The school has an impressive 70 classrooms in two buildings that are opposite each other and also has its own residence located in one of the buildings. All teachers are highly-qualified, university graduates, and there is a wide range of activities and excursions on offer to students each week. The school has just opened a new student centre with internet access, library and a small cafe. Staff in the reception speak all major European languages. And, finally, you can be sure of coming away with a good accent as the people from Hamburg pride themselves on having no area dialect and speaking a particularly high quality German!

What other students have said...
“The school and classes are very good: I could improve my German, because teachers spoke only this language and explained everything very well; they are really professional. I really liked Hamburger Hafen and St Michaels Kirche. Cactus was really helpful as well.” (Malgorzata Jachimowska, August 2010)
“I knew Cactus from its good reputation and I am really happy that I chose to deal with them; everything went very well. I loved Hamburg there is no other city in the world that I prefer; after my course I decided to stay 2 more months there.” (Karen Joyce, November 2009)
“I decided to book my first language course with Cactus because of the choice of course, the clear website and the competitive price. The classes were excellent. The size of the class and the teacher were very good and I enjoyed going to them. Hamburg is a very nice city with lots to see and do. The language school is in a good location and easy to find. I will recommend Cactus because of the good course price and because of the great experience I was able to make.” (Margaret Taylor, July 2009)
"I booked with Cactus because their prompt replies to my email queries.
I thought the school was good. The location is incredible. The school and its residence are in probably the richest district in Hamburg and within 100 metres of the Alster river.
The school accommodation is warm and dry but only just functional, not too comfortable."
(David Higgins, October 2008)
"I really like having two different teachers each day - with different styles, different focuses and sometimes different ideas. I had a great group of classmates, which would probably have more effect on my enjoyment than anything. I do not know anything about Colon other than the experiences of my class, but it drew a wide mix of people and experiences, adding to the conversations...
Hamburg is a great city and the school is directly in the heart of it. It is easy to get to by foot, bike, train - could not be easier.
I enjoyed the exhilarations when something clicked after the frustrations that come with living in a place where you can not communicate. My classmates were nearly all at a similar level, so we learned a lot from each other and avoided making some of the same mistakes again."
(Thomas Gillespie, September 2008)
"I choose Cactus for the really large range of language holidays on offer.
In Hamburg the school was excellent, very much impressed, and I would definitely return when the time is right.
Future clients should climb the Michaelis Kirche for a fantastic view of Hamburg.
Lubeck is a really nice town to visit and is only 45 minutes away by Regional Bahn. Fantastic! I would return tomorrow."
(Rebecca Scott, August 2008)
"It was an excellent school in a great location. The teachers were superb - much better than i hoped for. Hamburg is a very nice town. No further recomendations. All just right."
(David Piper - June 2008)
"I chose Cactus because they seemed to be well organized. The school was a very welcoming-great location. The classes were of high quality (good teachers). The Colon School is in the heart of hamburg and really well located. There are plenty of cafés around and the atmosphere is young and dynamic. This is a perfect location for visiting the city after the classes."
(Hortense de la Tour - January 2008)
"The school and the classes were very good. I stayed at the school residence, where people were very friendly. It was easy to make friends there. I really enjoyed the night life."
(Teodoro Martinez - September 2007)
"The school and the classes were very good, well organised and helpful. The teaching staff were concerned that I was gaining the maximum from my experience."
(Nicola Hill - August 2007)
"I thought the classes were interesting and of the appropriate level, with enthusiastic teachers. I really liked Hamburg - lots to see and do. I stayed with a host family, they were friendly and helpful with comfortable facilities. "
(Lauren Mitchell - August 2007)
"All the above in contrast to the superb job done in Toulouse by the staff there. Still, in the end, I did enjoy my 2 weeks in Hamburg, and hope to study with Cactus again."
(Jeanne-Marie Rosenmeier - September 2006)
"I really liked the school and the class. The size of the group was good and the teachers were good. I liked the city, Hamburg, and I'd also recommend that future students live with a host family, that way one can get a view of everydaylife as well as the language."
(Eva Susanne Undrum, February 2005)
"Der Rut, yes, I enjoyed my few last-minute days of German in Hamburg. The school is very good and, apart from a certain surprise and 'deference' because I am a) old and b) a teacher of German (the teacher of the class asked if we might dutzen) I managed to fit in and it certainly enlivened what might have been a rather boring week in Hamburg. Thanks for arranging things so quickly. Shall be coming to you again, though I don't know when, or which language! thanks again"
(Angela Parkes - Jun 04)
"Hallo Anna, wie geht's? Mir geht es ganz gut! :) I just loved everything in Hamburg. I think that it couldn't go better. The
teachers were very good, I felt always welcome and everything went just great. I will recommend to anyone that could be interested.
And you were great too, you helped me a lot, in the best way.
Many thanks, Ana."
