Spanish GCSE Revision course (20 lessons per week)
Madrid GCSE School
NEW GCSE revision course for year 10 and 11 pupils in school holidays!!!
Having worked with school groups and provided language summer camps for under 18s over the past 10 years, we are now proud to present our G.C.S.E. Preparation course in Madrid exclusive to UK students in Year 10 or 11 who want to improve their skills in Spanish language in preparation for the G.C.S.E. examination.
This particular programme has been specially developed with the help of leading independent schools in the UK, and is specially tailored to the syllabus and examination content in accordance with AQA, OCR, and EdExcel examination boards. All the students will be encouraged to participate in class in order to develop their communicative skills as well as do practice exercises directly related to the exam. Two levels of teaching are offered depending on whether the student is taking the Higher tier or Foundation tier.
The Programme:
The G.C.S.E. programme is open to all students in Years 10 and 11. Individual students to the programme will be assigned to a group of no more than 12 people; group bookings to this programme can form their own closed groups, or participate in open groups. If teachers wish to bring a small group from their school, we can provide discounts and free places for accompanying teachers. Each group will receive 20 hours of tuition through a specially designed, detailed teaching programme. The course is structured to help the student achieve the following objectives:
1) To acquire dominance in the core grammar, vocabulary, and level of communication demanded by the G.C.S.E. exam.
2) To further develop basic skills such as oral communication, reading, and writing.
3) To advance communicative flexibility by exposure and practice in different situations and fields as reflected in the curriculum.
4) To acquire a level of inter-cultural awareness; understanding the relation between the Hispanic community and the rest of the world and using alternative perspectives to challenge existing social stereotypes.
Daily schedule:
09.00 - 10.45: 2 Spanish classes
10.45 - 11.15: Break
11.15 - 13.00: 2 Spanish classes
Language immersion is the most effective way of improving a foreign language. For this reason, communication will always be in Spanish, above all in the classes, throughout the school, and also in the
accommodation, significantly improving the student’s communicability and all-round understanding of the language.
Daily programme content:
Sun: (Arrival at host)
Mon: The World
Tues: Travelling & holidays
Wed: Work & lifestyle
Thu: Young people in society
Fri: Mock exam & presentation
Sat: Full-day excursion
Sun: (Departure)
In the programme shown above, the subject content of each day will be subdivided into 5 differing themes, all of which have specific vocabulary and strategies of communication, helping the student consolidate the grammar and adapt in order to express himself coherently in each situation. Class activities are implemented to help the student acquire and assimilate the knowledge learnt in each lesson.
Materials:
All textbooks and other academic materials are provided. Authentic written and audiovisual sources are taken from across the media, including newspaper articles, magazines, advertisements, radio, television, and cinema, selected according to the course.
Each student receives a school student ID card on arrival with the his/her identity, school information, and contact number in case of emergency. It can be also be used to gain discounts on entries to museums, etc.
Accommodation:
Accommodation is with host families. You will be in a shared twin room with another English student doing the G.C.S.E. course. Nowhere else will the student so directly experience real Spanish life, and nothing could be better in helping improve language skills. The host families have worked with our partner school for many years; the families know from experience what the role of a host is. However, the word 'family' should not be taken too literally since the family could also be a single parent who takes in students because he or she enjoys the company.
Families are selected after a long interview and are made aware of the peculiarities, customs, and rights of foreign students, and of their own rights and obligations in facilitating the family-student-school relationship. In choosing host families, the school looks for Spanish families who appreciate receiving foreign students. All host families are carefully selected and have particular experience in accommodating students from the UK.
The school is always in close contact with the family and visits their accommodation at least twice a year. Students fill in a feedback form of their stay at the end of the course. It is always possible for the student to change families should there be any difficulties in adapting to the lifestyle of one particular household.
Pre-arrival:
Before arrival, students will receive a student manual giving more information on the rules and regulations of living in provided accommodation, basic customs of Spanish families and behavioural tips in the house, and information about the traditional customs of Spain and the local area, especially regarding the rather different Spanish timetable and food customs.
Meals:
Host families provide 3 meals a day and a laundry service. Meals will be together with the family but the student should be aware that Spanish eating times can be rather different: Breakfast usually consists of coffee and biscuits; Lunch is the most important meal of the
day, usually served between 2-4pm; Dinner is a lighter meal normally served in the late evening.
Airport transfers:
An arrival transfer service, between the airport and the accommodation, is included in the price and is available on the start date of the course. Once the student’s flight details are known, a representative will be waiting at the airport to transport them directly to their accommodation. If you wish to arrange a return transfer as well, we will be happy to arrange this at an extra cost.
