The school has its own campus, with 40 classrooms, 2 guesthouses and a restaurant, which is frequented by Berliners, too. It is the only school in Germany which has a campus which is open all year round. The location on Kastanienallee within walking distance of Alexanderplatz and Museum Island is very stylish: Kastanienallee is nicknamed casting ally, because many fashion and film shootings taking place here. Like Goethe Institut, the school is an official testing center for ZD Zertifikat Deutsch. All courses are complemented by after-class activities in Berlin and weekend trips to other places in Germany. Accommodation is possible in new rooms with excellent facilities, both on campus and in Berlin homestays. All students at the school get their own "My Space" style page on the school's network allowing them to communicate with other students at the school during their time in Berlin and after they have finished their studies.

Out and About
Even if museums aren't really your thing, there are so many here that you should just bite the bullet and head for the Dahlem Museum complex, where they've thoughtfully put seven under one roof. In the open-air museum that is the city itself, fragments of history lie alongside testimonies to the unprecedented boom of the recent decade: Checkpoint Charlie vies with the new Reichstag while Brandenburg Gate vies with the Kurfürstendamn's luxurious 'Mile of Shops'. And with breakfast something of an all-day institution, those late night bars just become all the more appealing…

Best Time to Go

During the summer, the climate in Berlin stabilises to a steady temperature and seemingly endless sunshine. In an average month there is usually only one day that doesn't have sunshine. Daytime temperatures reach a pleasant 23° Celsius (74° Fahrenheit) and rainfall is minimal. The winters are cold and wet but rarely extreme. Snowfall is common throughout most of Germany but doesn't often cause any inconvenience in Berlin.

What other students have said...

“I chose Cactus because i knew them from their good reputation. The German classes were excellent and I really appreciated the fact that it was very easy to combine the studies and the fun. I had a lot of fun in the fantastic city that Berlin is!” (Tiziana Missana, October 2009)

“I already had a German course in Hamburg before with Cactus and I had a very good experience. Berlin is great in a social point of view; there are a lot of places to go out and also great places to eat.” (Publio Tapia, August 2009)

“Would I recommend Cactus? Yes of course because it is a really fun experience. Berlin is a fantastic city and the tours available were fantastic; the school classes were really good and fun. I met a lot of new people from different cultures that shared the same goal as mine and we communicated in German to practice what we learnt in the classes.” (Mark Wilkinson, August 2009)

The location of the school was great! The accommodation was nice and provided everything I needed.
(Sam Morrell - June 2008)

"The classes and the teachers were very good. Also, the classes were quite small. I stayed in host accommodation. The host was very nice and friendly. The accommodation was very clean and tidy. It was very close to public transport links and was easy to find. The whole experience was very good. Speaking with the host family in German in additon to speaking in German all day in the school was good."
(Valerie Corr - June 2008)

"The school and the classes were very good. The room I was given in the host family was very nice too."
(Ian Blair, April 2008)

"I found Cactus to be part of a large organisation, which reassured me that they weren't one of the visa front schools, which we have here. I also liked that I could pay on-line with my bank card. I was impressed by the school and the teachers.I think I have learnt more in one week than I learn in a few months on my courses over here!"
(Diane Topham - February 2008)

"I chose Cactus because I found that the format of the Cactus website was very clear and easy to use, with handy drop-down selections. The people I stayed with were very nice."
(Stephen Roberts - January 2008)

"The service Cactus offered seemed to be very good, with a wide range of courses in many different countries that's why I chose to book my course with Cactus.
The school was fantastic. Restaurant, bar, computer room and even a party room, all on campus. Plenty of activities organized, catering for a wide range of interests. Teachers were very friendly. The intensive course dealt with the aspect of improving your oral skills very well.
Berlin is a fantastic city, with absolutely everything you could want, and it's dead cheap. It has museums and monuments aplenty, and for the nightlife there's no end of bars and clubs. What I really liked was the authentic feel of the places, as there were very few places which were expensive-looking, they were in underground rooms, or in soviet-area buildings, and this just struck me as brilliant, as it felt so vibrant and fun-focussed.
Everything was amazing. The school, the classes, the teachers, the fellow students, the activities, Berlin's sights, bars, clubs, people. It is a fantastic city in every way."
(Wolmar Velterop - November 2007)

"I chose Cactus because of balance of price, helpful service from executives, and realistic student testimonials. The school seems first rate and attracts a broad range of students both by age and from across the world. For long-stay students, they have a well worked-out programme of activities and seem really clued-up about making effective German speakers from those with little or no knowledge. The tutors were helpful and supportive. I stayed in an appartment on the campus, which was great. The studio was clean, with all amenities, and very secure. The on-site cafeteria is OK for breakfast and lunch, quality is fine and prices are kept low. Berlin is a great city with reasonably-priced, joined-up public transport. The sights are great (the Reichstag being a must to visit!)and the atmosphere is very welcoming"
(Stephen Jones, May 2007)

"The school was clean and offered a lot of different activities. The restaurant was nice, and a good social place at night to meet the other students. The classes were well organised and the rooms were spacious. The location of the school was good, there were lots of different types of shops, and they weren't too expensive. I enjoyed meeting new people, learning about the history of berlin, and how the system in berlin works e.g. how to rent a place."
(Karen Shaw - Oct,2006)

"A recommendation from a friend made me book with Cactus. The teachers were friendly and approachable and I enjoyed the lessons. Berlin is fantastic, so much to see and do. The public transport is excellent but don't think you can get away without buying a Fahrkarte...they do check! And it's not worth taking the risk as the fine is 40 euros. Buy an up to date map when you arrive. Berlin is always changing; street names changing, new buildings appear and some stations change their names too....so it's worth it!
The city is what I most enjoyed about my trip. Berlin is a very interesting, up and coming, diverse city."
(Catherine Wintrip, July 2006)

"I chose Cactus because there was a good write up in the Guardian + you seemed helpful when I phoned to ccheck on the location of the school. The school was really nice (both the staff and buildings/atmosphere). I found the 'no English' approach a bit difficult initially but overall everyone was so helpful it was easy to get to grips with things. Scool was particularly good at providing extra activities and visits in the afternoons and also encouraged students in a class to plan their own outings. I would definitely use the school again. Berlin is wonderful - too much to see and do in a week.
The school was in a nice part of town away from the main tourist sights but with plenty of facilities. Public transport links were not particularly good (quite a walk from the nearest S & U bahn stations and although a bus did stop outside it didn't provide a particularly useful link into the town centre). I arranged my own accommodation at CityStay Hostel in Hackescher Markt (Rosenstraße 16, 10178 Berlin - Mitte)- I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone wanting independence and a central location. Meeting new people (staff and students), a trip to the Philharmonie organised by a musical member of my class was the highlight of my week - I just wish work commitments would have allowed me to stay longer. Getting up very early on my first morning for the initial assessment - getting to the school for 07:30 was hard work when you were not sure of the route etc."
(Sandy Fisher, June 2005)

"The trip was excellent thankyou so much. The school was super, standard of teaching excellent and the atmosphere in the school was great & yes my German improved.

My apartment was fine, I had a lovely little room, and my host was super, extremely kind, very interesting. She is a born & bred
Berliner so could tell me all about the history of the city and spoke German to me all the time which was excellent. We got on extremely well and made a number of little trips together. Berlin is a wonderful city - I thoroughly enjoyed my time there & hope
to go back soon. All the arrangements at the UK end, via Laura were also extremely well handled. I didn't have to worry about a thing. Thanks very much to you all - I had a wonderful holiday!"
(Alexandra Gillies, April 2004)

"Dear Rut,
The course went very well, after my initial test it was clear to the tutor that I have an unusual problem in German, I speak it relatively fluently
but as I have never had a German lesson before my grammar is at a beginners level, as Gudrun put it my German is a sort of Muttersprache. So for
conversation I was in B2/C1 classes for grammar my level was at A2 but I stuck with B2 so fairly hard work. The accomodation in the Jugendhotel
was surprisingly comfortable with helpful staff. I anticipate another visit maybe in the autumn.
Thanks, Craig"
(Craig Gerschalter, April 2004)

"Hi, I really enjoyed the trip to Germany thanks. The host family was lovely and I had lots of contact with the lady so managed to speak lots of German with her. The public transport was very good and very easy to get around on ...to school, airport, into the city etc.etc. I wish I had spent longer there, as one week is not enough to make a real difference and I should have prepared more before i went, and done some revision. I didn't learn new things, just things that I had forgotten in german which was a bit frustrating. For the intensive afternoon lessons I changed class in the as
I felt the level was not right and pace too slow. The teachers were really helpful and okay with this. There is lots to do and see in Berlin, and the school arranges some leisure activities too.
rgds, Viki "
(Victoria Hutton Mar 2004)

"Hi Laura,
Yes overall I enjoyed my holiday in Berlin. I think I have learnt quite a bit, both with my German language skills and knowledge of cultural things etc.
The lessons and the teacher were very good and I had a good time - met some nice students at the school and visited lots of impressive architecture
and museums, and best of all improved my language skills I think.
Many thanks"
(Phil)

"Dear Laura
Many thanks for all your help with the German course - all went excellently.
I am working out the dates for the next course in August/September, as I want to step up a level to the elementary course. I am trying to talk my
boss into 2 weeks, and would prefer an apartment share this time.
Will contact you as soon as I have firm dates. In the meantime I enclose your questionnaire, duly completed.
Many thanks"
(Kim Comoto)

"The school was nice in that it created a welcoming atmosphere for the student to engage and interact with each other. Offered a very nice learning environment and the staff were very friendly and helpful."
(Richard Hamilton)
