Junior Web Developer

Cactus is looking for a competent and enthusiastic Junior Web Developer to join the Creative Department of our Brighton-based office. You will be report directly to the Senior Web Developer, working with internal clients, and within a team that includes web designers, SEO and management.

A significant part of your role will involve ongoing development and maintenance of websites and backend systems, and creating a new Web 2.0 section of our online presence.

You must be proficient in troubleshooting and debugging existing code as well as developing new functionality within an existing application framework and integrating with third party applications.

Essential skills/experience:

  • PHP
  • MySql
  • Good understanding of relational databases and SQL skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience working within a professional environment
  • HTML and CSS

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Dreamweaver
  • Javascript
  • Standards compliance
  • CodeIgniter or PHP framework
  • ExpressionEngine or similar Open Source CMS
  • MVC
  • SVN / CVS
  • Linux or Server Terminal Debian
  • An interest in languages and travel

Junior Web Designer

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Junior Web Designer to join our team at Cactus, based at our Brighton office. The right candidate will have a genuine passion and the right attitude to join the Creative Department of this well-establised company.

Key responsibilities:

  • Designing and maintaining websites that adhere to web standards (tasks to include creating new template pages, correcting mistakes and uploading images)
  • Assisting with the company newsletter, mailshots and general marketing activities
  • Involvement with Creative, Accounts and project management staff to ensure successful completion of projects

Essential skills/experience:

  • Full competence with X/HTML and CSS, and knowledge of Dreamweaver
  • Photoshop / Fireworks
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Excellent English

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Some print design
  • Macromedia Flash
  • Familiarity with using a CMS to maintain a website
  • An interest in languages and travel

The successful candidate will ideally have good design competence and layout skills, excellent communication skills, and an interest in keeping up-to-date with all the latest web technologies and developments. Previous experience of developing websites is desirable.

Client Liaison / Course Administrator

You will be working on the foreign language evening courses we currently organise across the UK. We organise courses in 30 centres across the UK in over 20 languages (www.languagecoursesuk.co.uk). We currently have over 2,000 students on our courses.

Key responsibilities:

  • Advising clients on language courses
  • Processing internet & phone bookings
  • Liaising with partner schools & bookshops/publishers
  • Helping to administrate language courses across the UK & worldwide
  • Web & offline marketing duties

Qualifications/experience:

  • Considerable customer service experience
  • Supplier-side account management experience
  • A Level/equivalent or above
  • Computer (Word, Excel, Outlook) & web literate

Qualities:

  • Energy & enthusiasm

Operations Assistant

Working within Cactus Language Training (www.cactuslanguagetraining.com and www.languagecoursesuk.co.uk), this role will involve organization of both our group evening courses and tailor-made language courses worldwide. There will be a strong logistical focus. You will report directly to the Operations Manager.

Key responsibilities:

  • Helping to administrate language courses across the UK & worldwide
  • Liaising with teachers and clients by phone and email
  • Monitoring courses and supporting teachers

Qualifications/experience:

Positions available now from 1 to 12 months:

Admin Support to Managing Director

This support role involves working alongside the Managing Director on a number of ongoing projects. A near native level of English, both written and spoken, is required, as well as good attention to detail and proficiency in Excel. Daily tasks will involve liaising with partner schools, collecting stats and helping out in other departments or projects where needed.

Finance Department - Work Experience

A support role within the Cactus Finance Department. This is an exciting role giving the candidate an insight into how a finance department operates. You will be trained in various areas such as banking, foreign currency purchasing, sales margin reporting and debtor analysis. Your experience will culminate with an understanding of the broader financial picture of a business.

Cactus Language Support

A support role within the busy Cactus Language Sales Team.
The support role would include answering the telephone for our department and directing calls to other members of staff. We therefore require a near native level of English. Duties will also include using our in-house admin system to process orders and payments and to assist in responding to some basic customer enquiries. Daily tasks will also involve gathering data from schools, updating the website with valuable information, collecting stats and helping out in other departments or projects where needed.

Cactus Language Training Support

A support role within the busy Cactus Language Training Sales Team. The support role would include emailing clients for feedback and responding to their emails; collating feedback for the websites; collating statistics from feedback forms; sending confirmation emails to FLUK clients; printing & binding books; burning CDs; sending course materials to clients / teachers; helping to source teachers; other bits and bobs as required. You will need to have a near native level of English, good attention to detail, good written English, be proficient in Excel, intelligent & amiable.

Cactus TEFL Support

A support role within the busy Cactus Tefl Sales Team. The support role would include logging download information on a spreadsheet and creating a report and graphs at the end of each month; emailing clients who have downloaded TEFL course application forms but not yet submitted them; phoning and emailing schools to check course spaces; faxing applications; calling schools to confirm which clients have started courses, and amending the status on the backend; contacting schools for their 2007 dates & contacting potential applicants; contacting schools to find out which Taster Day clients went on to book courses. You will need to have a near native level of English

* Please note that interns working for less than 6 months may not be paid.

Part-Time Language Teachers

We are currently seeking foreign language teachers in any language. You must be a native speaker, qualified and experienced to teach both groups and individuals - anywhere in the UK. Please fill out our Language Trainer Questionnaire. (Do not send a CV).

 

Paid/Unpaid Work Experience/Internships

We sometimes offer general office positions for foreign students (non-native English speakers). You may be involved in many or all areas of the business, depending on your experience. You must speak and write excellent English (Upper Intermediate or above) and be ready to work for a minimum of 2 months. If you are from outside the EU, you may be required to combine this internship with a paid English course.

Please note that interns working for less than 3 months will not be paid. For those working for longer than 3 months, you will be paid £200 per calendar month. However you will need to be able to cover your own accommodation and expenses. If we are unable to place you in our company, we may find you an alternative internship in another British company.
