The Cactus Scoop - April 2005
:: The Cactus 'On Location' Awards 2005

The Oscars have hardly been put on the shelves, yet Hollywood's glitz & glamour is already preparing to descend on Cannes. With the Film Festival coming up in May we thought this was the perfect opportunity to follow in the footsteps of our idols and give you our top linguistic alternatives to their big screen adventures. They may be able to do an award-winning speech, but can they do it in another language? We think the prize in this case goes to you...

French in Nice

Nice is the gateway to France's stunning and fashionable Côte d'Azur. Sitting between Monaco and Cannes, and just 30km from the Italian border, the city boasts an enviable location on the Baie des Anges and has a dramatic backdrop of cliffs hiding a number of charming French villages.

Back on the seafront the Promenade des Anglais is the place to see, and be seen - the perfect place to sip a cocktail and spot the big names returning from the Film Festival in neighbouring Cannes. Taking a language course here is the perfect way to avoid high prices and overbookings but still be in the middle of all the action.

French in Nice
"The classes were a good mix of grammar and oral exercises, for my level at least, and the teacher was very good. Nice is a lovely city with a good amount of culture, history and beaches. The family where I stayed were very friendly and all facilities
I needed were there. Their willingness to adjust their French
to my level was great." Hanke Bearda

:: Talk Like A Local In... Argentina
Welcome to our brand new section, designed to help you fit in with the locals during your travels. Each month we will be choosing a new destination and giving you the inside info on the language and any cultural peculiarities...

Argentina

Argentinian Talk

1. Brush Up On Your Verbs

Informal 2nd person singular: use 'vos' instead of 'tú' > no stem change but an accent on the
last syllable:
tú hablas > vos hablás
tú puedes > vos podés
tú vienes > vos venís

2. Perfect Your Accent

The most obvious difference to outsiders is the pronunciation of Argentine Spanish.
eg. 'll' receives the 'zh' sound, like the 's' in measure or the 'z' in azure.

Argentinian Talk 3. Now You're Talking

che = hey! hey you! (this is how Che Guevara got his name)
boludo/a = addressing term among friends (eg. say 'che voludo' and you will REALLY fit in)
cheto = cool
bárbaro! = great, fantastic
irse de joda = to have fun, party
choripan = chorizo sausage inside bread roll (very popular)
chau! = goodbye (there is a strong Italian influence in all aspects of Argentine life)
and never say...'coger
'.

Next month we'll help you get around another part of the world. Any suggestions or requests? Feel free to email us if you are going anywhere in particular and want some useful language tips!

Alex Davydov: 2 Months Volunteering in Peru, Jan 05

"¿Cómo estás tú? Ahora estoy en Patagonia...

...I'll continue in English since that goes much faster. I've been wanting to thank you for setting up what has been a wonderful experience in Cuzco, Peru. The school was excellent--especially the professors and the school's dedicated guide, Edward, who does an excellent job not only giving tours, but bridging the gap from English to Español for people of all abilities. Personally, I went from several catch-phrases, to being able to communicate all that I need to in Spanish in my four weeks at the school. Since then, my voluntary work and traveling through Chile and Argentina have further helped me improve my fluency. The volunteer experience at the Centre Juveníl de Marcavalle was great as well. If nothing more, in my month there, I felt that I was able to provide the adult attention that many of these boys lack in their normal lives. Aside from teaching sports three days per week, I found myself coming there to spend time with the boys in my free time as well. Along with the other volunteers there, we came by the Centre on the eve of Christmas to help our friends there celebrate."

Angela Walker: Individual Spanish & Dance Course in Havana, March 05

“I absolutely loved Havana and didn't want to come home at all. The place has so much atmosphere and charisma and the Cuban people are amazing. All the people
I met who were on the course were great and I had no trouble making friends from the moment I got there. There is something about Havana that cannot be put into words and I was very very sad to leave.

The accommodation was absolutely fine and the Cuban family that I stayed with were very very nice and treated me like a daughter. The food, though very basic in Cuba, was good. To be honest I think staying with a family in Havana is the best way as with having all the Spanish lessons, salsa lessons and generally enjoying yourself, you don't have time to think about going out to eat.

I enjoyed everything, but especially the music and the salsa dancing as for me this is what I remember most about Cuba. The Cuban people, though they have nothing, have a vitality that is amazing. It makes you realise that money isn't everything and that living life to the full is how it should be. I loved the people - my Spanish teacher, the salsa dancing teachers and the family I stayed with. The other people I met doing the course were also really nice and I've made some good friends.”

Lisa Gerard Sharp: 2 Week Italian & Cookery Course in Siena, Italy.
March 05

"Just to let you know that the Dante Alighieri Siena school was excellent, both for the language side and the cookery, not to mention the atmosphere, which was welcoming, personal and fun, and the young, committed and enthusiastic staff who made everyone feel at home. I was very sorry to leave.

The school occupies an historic palazzo in a charming part of Siena, which is convenient for the city sights. Typical activities include cultural visits, excursions outside Siena, talks, films, theatre and dinner with the whole school. Lunch at school provides another opportunity for mixing with one's fellow-students, and practising the language as it's often the only language in common, and students were keen to speak it as much as possible.

Siena is the ideal place to learn - everything is on a human-scale, and relaxed, especially out of season. The city is romantic, evocative, feminine, low-key, easily walkable, with kind local people who have the time to chat, not to mention the profusion of rustic inns, with great food at very reasonable prices.

The cookery course was equally impressive, with various superb Italian and Tuscan dishes and full dinners taught by (and eaten with!) the outstanding Serena, an entertaining, passionate, talented chef who has also taught cookery courses in the UK, so knows the British background. The course was easily comprehensible in Italian, as she cleverly piched it to different levels and always checked students understood, and encouraged them to perfect the dishes with personal tricks of the trade."
