* Rock in Rio Lisboa: 28th-30th
May *
| It was the Portuguese who set
out to discover the world, but it seems the world now wants
to discover Portugal. Modern-day Lisbon is buzzing with activity
yet remains beautifully old-fashioned - a compelling combination
for its growing number of visitors and putting it firmly on
the map as a place to be seen. Even more so when you see this
is beauty on a budget, a world away from the inflated prices
of other European capitals.
Come at the end of May and those traditional heart-rending
fado melodies are swapped for something a little different...after
its huge success in Brazil, Rock in Rio is coming to Lisbon
and this is your chance to see Portuguese, Brazilian and other
global musicians take to the stage, kicking off with our very
own Paul McCartney! Rock

"I found that the school was first class with superb resources.
It was very near to where I was staying with my host family.
The accommodation was very good and clean and my family made
me feel welcome. The small size of the class (3 pupils) was
also conducive to receiving excellent personal tuition. I feel
that my language skills have improved immensely and am now more
confident in conversing with the Portuguese.
I also found that the organised outings were of great benefit
and brought together pupils from various classes at the school.
I would certainly recommend it for anyone considering improving
their language skills. Kindest regards, Ray Dillon." |

Jenny Conaty & Ashleigh Cook: A Level French Course in Bordeaux,
April 04
"We had a BRILLIANT time in our week in Bordeaux! Annick,
who was our host family for the week was an amazing woman, and she
was really keen to help us. She spoke very clearly and was quite
flexible with the times we were in and out, and she always gave
us enough to eat! Bordeaux was an amazing place and the school had
a really nice atmosphere. The course itself was quite basic - we
didn't really learn much grammar, or improve or practise grammar,
but we did learn a lot of new vocabulay and we did a lot of oral
work. |
 |
|
The week was briilliant really for improving
our confidence and our ability to speak and get around
ways of saying certain things. The times of the courses were very
good as well because it was 9am-1pm, which meant we had the whole
rest of the day to do pretty much what we wanted. The organised
activities were quite good as well, the tour was really interesting
and the cinema was beneficial also. I thought it was really good
that none of the teachers at the school would speak English or let
us use dictionaries, because they were all really easy to understand
with clear accents. If we weren't sure of a word they would describe
it to us in French which gave us loads of synonyms which are useful
for our exams.
Basically the week was AMAZING and we really
wanted to stay an extra week (or month). I would definitely
recommend it for the culture and the experience, and for improving
oral skills and learning vocab. If someone was wanting to improve
or learn grammar it isn't really that focused on this, although
they might have looked at that in more depth in the second week.
Anyway, thank you so much for helping us organise it - we had a
brilliant time!"
* Good luck to Jenny & Ashleigh in
their exams this summer! *

| Viki Hutton: Intensive
German Course in Berlin, March 04
"I really enjoyed my trip to Germany thanks. The host
family was lovely and I had a lot of contact with the lady
so managed to speak lots of German with her. The public transport
was very good and very easy to get around on...to school,
to the airport, into the city etc. I wish I had spent longer
there, as one week is not enough to make a real difference
and I should have prepared more before I went, and done a
little revision. I mainly learnt things that I had forgotten
in German which was a bit frustrating. For the intensive afternoon
lessons I changed class and the teachers were really helpful
and okay with this.
There is lots to do and see in Berlin, and the school arranges
some leisure activities too. Thanks and regards."

We work hard but we also like to play hard at Cactus,
and our latest Easter outing involved us all heading
to the Greyhound Racing and trying our luck at dogs
such as Bally Brazil Hero, Hava Bita Faith and Tropical
Punch. And it was the Teacher Training dept. who got
lucky - with a whopping £18 win at the end of
the night! Well done Suzanne, and until next time...
