One of the very best ways to learn vocabulary
in London is to think about what you like doing, or what you
like talking about, and find ways of getting close to where
that vocabulary is used in London.
For example, there is usually a local college or ‘night
school’ where you can sign up for a course in anything
from painting to pottery, healthcare to hairdressing. Some
courses last for just a weekend, others maybe once a week
for 10 weeks, or even a whole school year. Not only will you
meet new friends from outside your school, but you will also
speak English together and specialise in the vocabulary you
need for your own life.
Think about what your hobbies and interests would lead you
to doing in your own country, and look into ways of doing
the same thing here, or even try different experiences that
you’ve never done at home, which will bring you into
close contact with local people or experts in something where
you would like to improve your English.
Here are some examples:
Sports
Organise to have a private lesson in a club in a sport you
enjoy, or that you’d like to learn. You can play almost
any sport in London, and by taking a lesson with a coach,
you’ll improve your skills and also pick up the vocabulary
of something which interests you.
Art
Things like painting, drawing, and other art courses are good
because you can use your non-language skills whilst learning
interesting new English vocabulary. You also find that you
get chatting to local people at the same time.
Languages
It’s quite interesting to try learning another language
whilst you are in London. It might seem unusual for you to
have explanations of the new language in English, instead
of your own language. Also, if you learn a very unusual language
for a few weeks, you will suddenly find it much easier to
learn English! See languagecoursesuk.co.uk for more details.
TV shows
It’s often possible to see TV shows being filmed in
London, where they require an audience. Many of these are
free, and again, will help you improve your English vocabulary,
whilst being in a fun, exciting English speaking environment.
Ask your school if they have any details for you.
Please email us if you have any of your own ideas, and we
can add these to the site.
