The capital of China is an absorbing blend of towering skyscrapers, exquisite temples, busy roads, tranquil parks, teahouses and t'ai chi. Life can be fast-paced one minute, peaceful the next. Yet one thing's for sure, Beijing has changed a lot over recent years and is likely to change even more in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics. But it will take more than economic reform to overshadow the legacy of centuries-long occupation by various dynasties - the old imperial capital is looking to the future but remains immersed in a rich and powerful past.
