Trinidad is suspended in a magical colonial timewarp. You'd hardly know that the rest of the world was pushing impatiently into the 21st century when, standing in the Plaza Mayor, you realise you're completely surrounded by perfectly preserved churches and monuments dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. And let's hope it stays this way - since 1998 Trinidad has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which should go a long way to ensuring we can enjoy its cobbled streets, red tiled roofs and stunning palaces for years to come.
