Located halfway up the Western coast of France, La Rochelle is a fun and dynamic city that is home to thousands of students. One of the real highlights of the city, and possibly its most famous feature, is the beautiful old harbour and its two towers - key to the city's defence in the Middle Ages. La Rochelle was one of France's key ports for many centuries, and has further historical significance with its link to the Knights Templar, who made La Rochelle their main Atlantic base.
There are plenty of things on offer for visitors to the city, including lovely shopping areas and a vast array of bars and restaurants. Tourist features unique to La Rochelle include its aquarium, widely regarded as one of the biggest and best in Europe, and the nearby Ile de Ré, a beautiful island connected to La Rochelle by a 2.9 km long bridge - perfect for anyone who likes outdoor pursuits such as cycling and watersports.
