Just south of Dusseldorf in Germany's 'mid-west' is the charming city of Cologne. With its strategic position on the Rhine, the Romans were quick to settle here and lay the foundations for what was to become an important city of culture and commerce. Little change today then - Cologne is at the forefront of Germany's economy, has a multicultural population, and enjoys worldwide renown for its museums, fine art collections and great architecture. It is also the country's centre for the Roman Catholic Church, a slightly less obvious claim to fame when you realise just how much the kolner like to party…daily mayhem in the city's bierkellers not even a patch on the festivities at springtime Carnival.
