Located on the North West coast of Sardinia, Alghero is an Italian city with an obvious Catalonian influence. This aspect of Sardinian culture dates back to the fourteenth century, when the conquerors of the Crown of Aragón arrived in Sardinia with boats of colonists in tow. Their attempt to replace the local population proved more successful than many others before, and as a result Sardinia’s Catalonian heritage can still be seen all around – in the architecture, the cuisine and even the street signs. Alghero is best known today as a tourist destination, and although the culture and history of the city are partly responsible for this, the translucent waters and white-sand beaches of the area probably also have something to do with it…
