For some, Mexico City is nothing more than a stopping off point
en route to other places within Mexico - but in many ways it encapsulates
all that is Mexico, and as such makes for a fascinating introduction
to this lively Central American country. It's without doubt a city
of contrasts and emotions: smog-filled streets give way to tranquil
green parks, high-rise offices tower over colonial palaces, poor
slums sprawl towards ancient ruins and beggars cross your path to
world-class museums. Yet despite the city's enormity its centre
is quite compact, so you can take much of it in by foot - taking
deserved breaks for a delicious freshly squeezed juice or ice-cold
Margharita - or jump in one of the ubiquitous green and white VW
Beetle taxis and really do it in style.
The Tourist Assistance Card
Mexico City is one of Cactus’ recommended destinations this autumn, due to the new “Tourist Assistance Card” which is now issued to visitors free of charge. It entitles tourists staying in the city’s hotels to free emergency medical care, so you can travel with peace of mind.
