Alicante is the king of holiday destinations. You wouldn't even want to count the number of tourists who pass through the airport each year, on their way to the crowded resorts of the Costa Blanca. But Alicante is a little different. The sun shines by day and the clubs thump by night, but underneath it all there's a certain Spanish charm that too often gets overlooked. The focus of the town is, naturally, the waterfront, but behind this you have broad, palm-fringed boulevards such as Esplanada de España, and a number of historical and cultural attractions basking under the sun. When raising your glass in the bustling bars of El Barrio just take a look at how old those buildings really are; when looking up at the castle from your deckchair take a second to imagine its 16th century past; and when peeling the prawn from your arroz marinera don't forget that the whole town grew from one small fishing village. A far cry from today maybe, but it's all there just simmering under the surface.
