There aren't many places that can claim to have 322 days of sunshine each year and 20km of beaches, but the town of Denia, situated roughly half way between Alicante and Valencia on Spain's eastern coast, does just that. And although it's true that many people do come here for the sun and the sea, Denia has much more to offer if you go below the surface: it bears the mark of the many civilisations that have occupied this spot, with glimpses of Carthaginian, Roman and Arab architecture; it boasts a lively calendar of festivals and events, and its location guarantees a delicious and varied menu of fish and Mediterranean cuisine.
