The Newcastle of today is a trendy, cultural city in England's far northeast. Sitting on the banks of the Tyne, it boasts a couple of millenia of history, with even the 'new castle' that gave the city its name pushing 1,000 years old. At its industrial peak, Newcastle lived off its thriving coal and shipbuilding industries, and its inhabitants, known as Geordies, have always grown up fiercely independent and proud of their city. As home to two universities, a legendary nightlife, a well-maintained metro system and a much-loved Premier League football team, it may be a long way up north but it's hard not to be seduced by Newcastle's unquashable spirit.
