Hong Kong is one of Asia's most dynamic cities and, as a place to learn Chinese, you won't get much more of a full-blown immersion than here. It can at first seem overwhelming, the pace of life frenetic, the streets noisy and the air thick with chatter and the smells of cooking. Yet, as an extremely safe and organised city, you'll soon relax into the way of life and discover ample opportunity to practise the language at a local food stall (be prepared to have your taste buds tingled), en route with a friendly cab driver or staking a bet at the city's popular horse racing. You'll probably have one or two late nights, too, enjoying Hong Kong's excellent nightlife. But when you need some down time, you don't have to look far: tai chi at dawn, a peaceful teahouse or views of the harbour at sunset can work wonders.
