Finnish is one of the two official languages in Finland, the other being Swedish; most Finns are speakers of Finnish, however. It is also an official minority language in Sweden. It is a Finno-Ugritic language and is closely related to Estonian (Eesti), Lappish (Saami) and more distantly related to languages as far distant as Hungarian and Turkish. Spoken by about 6 million people, most of whom live in Finland, Finnish is an official language of the European Union and one of the working languages of the Nordic Council, along with the Scandinavian languages.
