Sitting on the Rhine and playing headquarter to a host of heavy industry and mining corporations, Düsseldorf has earned something of an unfair reputation when it comes to the beauty stakes. The capital of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia also suffered heavy bombing during WWII but, after careful reconstruction, what we see now is very much a sophisticated, successful and culturally diverse metropolis. Under its modern, efficient exterior flourishes a lively cultural scene, an appreciation of art, a flair for fashion and, in typical German spirit, a taste for beer.
