If you are planning on taking an English course in Canada, you might need to apply for a student visa depending on the length of your course and your nationality.

If you plan on studying for a 6 months period or less than 6 months, you can join any course or program without a Student Visa. It is recommended that students apply for a student visa prior to going to Canada because if you decide to extend the program you will have to leave the country to apply for a student visa.
Please note that the short term course exemption does not apply to students of all nationalities. Many students might require a Tourist visa to enter the country. According to Immigration Law, citizens of the following countries and territories do not require a Visa to enter Canada as a visitor:

In addition, the following citizens do not require a Visa to enter Canada as a visitor:
- British citizens
- British Overseas Citizens who are re-admissible to the United Kingdom
- Citizens of British dependent territories : Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, St. Helena or the Turks and Caicos Islands
Students from all other countries will be required to have a visa (tourist or student visa), regardless of the length of their stay. All students studying for more than six months must apply for a student visa regardless of their nationality. To be eligible to study in Canada you must:
- Prove that you have been accepted at a recognized school
- Prove that you have enough money to pay for your:
- tuition fees
- living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
- return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
- Be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate.
- Be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary.
- Satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when you have completed your studies.

Minors who are planning to study in Canada must apply for a study permit prior to their arrival in Canada. Minors who are traveling alone must bring contact information (name, address and phone number) with them about the custodian who will be responsible for them in Canada and where they will be going to school. They must also present a letter of permission from their parent(s) to the immigration office once they arrive in Canada. Please note that minors traveling to the Province of Quebec need a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (Certificate of Acceptance or CAQ) to study. Study permits for minor are only valid for the length of time of their studies, plus 90 days.
