Argentina's vibrant and cosmopolitan capital city lies on the estuary of the RÃo de la Plata, across the water from Uruguay. Home to some 13 million people, Buenos Aires is decidedly more European than South American in flavour. Its heart, or microcentro, throbs with stylish shops, elegant restaurants and quaint cafés, and its bustling streets and grand boulevards lead out to a total of 48 barrios, or neighbourhoods. By day it's a display of colonial buildings and faded architecture, but by night the air is filled with the sultry rhythms of tango and the sound of many a bar opening its door to a fashionable, and fashionably late, crowd.
