For a Latin American capital, San José is as bustling and cosmopolitan as you'll find. You could be anywhere when you look around and see all the shopping malls, fast food joints, trendy teenagers and busy office workers going about their daily lives. It even vies with the world's most thriving cities for its nightlife, with first class restaurants, thriving bars and nightclubs open until the early hours. Yet there are small give-aways that this is Costa Rica: the traditional eateries serving Tico treats; the humid but agreeable climate of the Central Valley; the magnificent former coffee baron mansions; the handicraft shops selling local artesanía and the endless opportunities for outdoor activities. It also makes a great base from which to explore the rest of the country, which is well worth seeing while you're here.
