:: Welcome to Heidelberg
Heidelberg nestles in the romantic Neckar valley in Germany's western state of Baden-Wurtennburg. It is the country's oldest university town, with some 30,000 students making a sizeable but lively impact on the lives of the existing 140,000 inhabitants. Come the summer, however, and the population more than doubles, as tourists from all over flock to Heidelberg. You can't blame them and in fact it's almost worth joining them - Heidelberg is home to a magnificent 13th century castle, half ruined but nonetheless striking and glorious red in colour against the surrounding landscape. It also boasts a thriving Aldstadt, or old town, with many traditional pubs and bars lining the cobbled streets, and a good number of students and locals to fill them. Whether you throw yourself into it, or whether you just soak up the romantic, mythical atmosphere from afar, Heidelberg is one little piece of Germany not to be missed.
