Because of its closeness to the Asian mainland (it’s actually closer to Seoul than to Tokyo), Fukuoka has long been one of Japan's most important and influencial cities. Fukuoka's long history is still evident today, but state-of-the-art shopping centres, entertainment venues and public transport systems confirm that it's a city that has very much moved with the times.
