Built by Peter the Great in 1703 to emulate European capitals,
St Petersburg is one of Russia's most beautiful cities. It is also
one of its most historical. The storming of the Winter Palace in
1917 marked the start of the Revolution and the very changes to
its name over the course of the last century reflect key periods
in Russian history. Today it is a unique and atmospheric blend of
