| A West Germanic language, Dutch is spoken by around 23
million people across France, Germany and Belgium. One of
the Indo-European languages, it is closely related to Frisian,
German and English. Originally a descendent of Old Frankish,
(a Germanic tribal language) Dutch is also the parent language
Afrikaans, a language spoken widely across South Africa. Although
Afrikaans is recognized a distinct language, they are mutually
intelligible with many of the same tonal intonations and grammatical
structures.
