If you can withstand the heat, the occasional surge of tourists and the odd torrent of rain, Mérida is one of Mexico's most charming cities. Just inland from the Gulf of Mexico, it is the traditional capital of the Yucatecan Maya and one of the most beautiful colonial cities on the peninsula. But while the 16th century conquistadores did their bit for fine Spanish architecture and wide, European-style boulevards, they couldn't quite bury all trace of the former Mayan dominance…the main square, or Plaza Mayor, is still the hub of activity, as it was all those years ago, and Mérida is still surrounded by some of the most impressive Mayan ruins in existence. It is also the centre of commerce for the whole Yucatan region. Hardly surprising therefore to find a very distinctive cuisine, a buzzing cultural scene and a thriving centre for shopping - when it comes to spending your pesos the only slight quandary is really whether you'd prefer a traditional cotton hammock, just perfect for those balmy nights, or one of those intricate Panama hats, to protect you from the hot midday sun…
