:: Welcome to Shanghai
Throughout its history Shanghai has been a city of change, and this is perhaps no more relevant than today. It has grown from a small fishing town on the Yangzi River to a thriving, futuristic metropolis of some 17 million people, a number set to grow each year. A focus of huge international investment, it is now China's industrial and economic centre, boasting a sophisticated new airport, interconnecting highways, towering skyscrapers and a whole new city in Pudong. Yet you don't have to look far to see traces of its fascinating past - a stroll along the waterfront, or Bund, will give you a glimpse of its beautiful old architecture, while the French Concession has lost little of its character and charm.
