Orginally, the word Dresden means people of the riverside forest.
Home to many dynasties of Saxon princes and kings, Dresden proudly
displays centuries of cultural splendour. One of Europe's most impressive
cities, Dresden was almost destroyed by the bombing of WWII, and
then rebuilt by the communist GDR. The city has a breath taking
mixture of architecture from imposing communist structuralism, to
ornate baroque facades, to traditional Bavarian homesteads. Its
distinctive gothic beauty, sprawling scale and light hearted atmosphere,
leaves a lasting impression on tourists.
