If you consider Italy to be a boot, then Otranto is located at the very bottom of its high heel. Known as the Salento peninsula, this southern promontory is located in the Lecce province of Puglia, a region long-known to Italians for its wonderful beaches, ornate Baroque towns, ancient ruins and fairytale cottages (trulli), but lesser known to foreign visitors - at present. Otranto itself is a beautiful seaside town about 40km from Lecce, its fine white sand beaches and clear water giving rise to plenty of leisure activities, and its southern location providing plenty of warm days in which to enjoy these. It also offers amenities to be expected of a popular resort - hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and venues - and a charming historic centre enclosed within fortifications facing the town's natural harbour.
