Bath is to England what Florence is to Italy and what Salamanca
is to Spain. An architectural delight, with picture-postcard views
everywhere you turn, this is a real honey-pot of a tourist attraction
- and deservedly so. Perfect sand-coloured rows of Georgian houses,
wide tree-lined crescents and quaint offbeat boutiques line the
cobbled streets and sparkling River Avon that winds gently through
the centre; buskers fill the air with Beethoven and Bach; and you
can spend hours simply wandering the streets and just soaking it
up. In the more literal sense you can even take a soak in the Roman
baths, reputed to cure all manner of ailments, for which the city
originally became famous. All in all the beauty of the area has
attracted a wealthy crowd, much as it did back in the 18th century,
but you can still avoid the hustle and bustle and high prices by
venturing a little further out. And the rolling countryside and
charming villages surrounding the town are certainly worth that.
