The city that sparked the Industrial Revolution has come a long way since its coal-burning and cotton-spinning past. Manchester is now England's third largest city and is a buzzing and cosmopolitan centre for sport, arts and entertainment. It exudes confidence, originality and ambition - and an irrepressible party spirit. With trendy bars, cafés and first class dining venues popping up all over the place you certainly won't be caught hungry or thirsty. You may however find yourself broke or hoarse after visiting the irresistable shops or watching a game at Old Trafford - football being the local passion. Fortunately nothing is ever too far, with the Metrolink tramway transporting you from one end of the city to another in no time. All in all you'd be forgiven for wondering why Beckham ever left in the first place...
