Client Feedback :: The School :: Accommodation :: Price Guide :: Book Now
This course is ideal for combining the experience of learning the language in a group whilst at the same time receiving individual classes. The group classes in the morning encourage student interaction and help you improve your practical communication skills. The individual classes in the afternoon allow you to work on areas you may feel need extra practise or which are of particular interest to you. The students who usually take this type of course are generally highly motivated to learn as much as they can in the shortest time possible. Classes take place Monday to Friday.

"I chose Cactus due to their prices. I was very pleased with the facilities in the school, the classrooms and the location, but I was most impressed with the teaching staff: their professionalism and commnunication skills were first class, furthermore my teacher also ensured that the teaching was at the correct level and my progress during the week surpassed all my expectations. I wouldn't have any... reservation in highly recommending the school to anyone visiting Bogota. I also enjoyed the city because within a short distance there are some great places to visit, in the mountains and surrounding areas."
(David Reid - May 09)
"Classes were excellent with professional and patient instructors. The facilities of the school were excellent, although computers often ran slowly. Bogota is a good city, with interesting things to do and friendly people. There are thefts, like in other major cities, but I found it safe. Unquestionably what I enjoyed most were the teachers in the school"
(Elizabeth Tromans - March 09)
"The school was great. I really enjoyed the course, the teaching style and the surrounding activities like the coffee break. My host family was always encouraging and willing to show me around, besides the neighborhood was very safe. I also used to venture out into Bogota. The only thing that I regret is not having booked a longer stay"
(Carolyn Chin Choy - February 2009)
"The school is located in a pleasant neighborhood (Alto Chapineiro) in a charming old house. I was fortunate enough to have private 1:1 lessons, both in the morning and afternoon, which greatly enhanced my learning experience.
This part of Bogota is quite charming and with the brown brick architecture and style of homes, could easily be mistaken for some city in Western Europe. I think that Bogota (and Colombia, for that matter) is in the midst of positive changes (better security, more foreign investment, etc.) and that would-be Spanish students should feel safe in selecting this program for their language needs."
(Bradley Sherrill - June 2008)
"My experience at the school in the primavera of 2008 was excellent beyond all expectations. The premises are pristine, professional and immaculate. The location is in Chapinero Alto which is tranquil, pleasant and located close to many stores and restaurants. Many misconceptions persist about Colombia but I felt safe and the warmth and sincerity of Colombians was a revelation. The willingness to customize the course to an individuals personal interests was vastly appreciated and the depth of knowledge and enthusiam as displayed by my instructors Maurizo and Leonardo was remarkable. This is my fourth language immersion experience as I previosly have studied French in Paris, Italian in Rome and Spanish in Buenos Aires. Everything about the school is on par with the best language instruction I have ever received and was truly world class.
Muchas Gracias!!!"
(David Dodds - March 2008)
"The school was excellent and in a very good central location, which was easy to get too. It was also well maintained and the classes where everything I could of wished for and more. The classes were, fun, relaxed and most importantly allowed me to learn all the things I wanted. And also the emapanadas!"
(Mark Green - December 2007)
"I booked with Cactus because it seemed to have the best array of courses in the widest range of locations - I don't think any other companies I saw offered Colombia, which was always my preferred destination.
The school was great - I had one to one tuition for the vast majority of the time, otherwise there was never more than one other student in the class. Teaching methods were inventive and imaginative, and all the staff were most friendly and helpful, particularly Maria.
Bogotá is a great city, with a terrible reputation. I felt very safe walking around alone, taking cabs off the street, going to nightclubs etc - in short, all the things that are supposed to be dangerous. The nightlife is phenomenal, the restaurants are amazing - in short it is a modern, vibrant city. I would strongly recommend anyone else visit.
My recommendations are easy - don't believe the hype!
Stayed in a homestay with a local family. (Alba Luiz Trujillo) and the homestay was a highlight of my trip - I really feel I got to experience Colombian life much more closely than had I stayed in a hotel or a hostel. It certainly helped my Spanish.
What I enjoyed most about the trip were the Colombian people - friendly, hospitable, welcoming, and lots and lots of fun. I much preferred Colombia to other South American countries I have visited.
Colombia is a great place to learn Spanish as the accent (apart from the Costeños) is clear and simple, and as there is no tourism and very little English spoken, you are forced by necessity to speak Spanish the whole time.
What I enjoyed leats about my trip was leaving!"

The school is located in Chapinero Alto, an attractive residential part of Bogotá, close to entertainment facilities as well as many shops, restaurants, shopping centres and local bus transport. It is located in a colonial house which has been refurbished to provide a suitable academic environment whilst still maintaining its originality and style. Facilities at the school include fully-equipped classrooms, a library, video and self-study facilities, and computers with internet and email access. Teachers are all selected on the basis of their qualifications, experience and personal qualities, and they each work to ensure that courses are relevant to students' interests and objectives, utilising a wide range of techniques and materials to very the pace and variety of classes. |

Please be aware that Bogota, like some other Latin American cities, can sometimes be unsafe and you should remain vigilant about maintaining your personal safety and avoiding petty crime. The majority of our clients’ language holidays to these locations are trouble free but we do recommend that you avoid going out after dark where possible.
All International students must have a medical insurance prior arriving in Colombia.
Bogota sees most of its rainfall during the summer months, even though it can rain here during any month of the year. Primarily, however, April and May usually have the highest amounts of rain, with June and July following. December, January and February are traditionally the months when it rains the least.
Canadians, Americans, British, Germans and Swedish
The School will provide students with information of the cultural and sport activities and all sort of entertainment available in Bogotá and the whole country. It will also provide assistance in bookings of tickets, trips, excursions and any other activity students might be interested in. The school will also organize its own social activities to encourage students to interact after class and also to have a first hand experience of Colombian life (field trips to local towns, national parks, ecological areas and museums ….). And inally the school will also support the students in anything the might required (car rentals, hostels reservations, mobiles phones rentals...)

| Staying with a host family is without doubt one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture of a country. They may not speak your language but that's all part of the learning experience - and fun! All host families are carefully selected and located within walking distance, or a short bus ride, of the school. You stay in a single room and receive meals as stated (bed & breakfast, half board or full board). Most families can cater for special dietary requirements, bed linen is provided, and laundry service and towels are sometimes included. A key is given to the outside door so you can come and go as you please. If for any reason you do not wish to eat at home please just notify the family in advance. It's great to experience the different cultural aspects of living with a family, such as different food and meal times, but please respect these too. We also suggest that you take some pictures of your family, friends and home as these can act as useful props for discussion. |
