Granada is a city of real contrasts. With its stunning location
at the foot of the
Sierra Nevada - snow-covered, as its name suggests, for much of
the year - you can quickly forget it's only an hour the other way
to the glistening Mediterranean. And within the city, where else
to appreciate the coming together of past and present than from
the roof of the Alhambra? This magnificent Muslim palace sitting
high above Granada is the stuff of picture postcards. A splash of
white on the hillside opposite marks the former Arab quarter of
the Albayzín, a maze of steep, narrow alleys, while downtown
Granada is all colour, activity and flamenco ruffle.
Plus Points:
Beautiful Moorish city
Cosmopolitan atmosphere
Most attractions within walking distance
Courses available every week, from 1 week upwards
Proximity to beaches & skiing
Many hours can also be spent just wandering through the narrow
cobbled streets of the Albaicín and taking in the beauty
of the old Muslim quarter, with its beautiful Islamic buildings
and white-washed walls.
A city of universal historical importance, thanks to its archaeological
remains,
Granada has a large university population, and students who come
here to learn Spanish enjoy an animated social and cultural life.
Excursions outside the city can easily be arranged, both to the
beach and the Sierra Nevada, one of Spain's liveliest ski resorts
where many peaks exceed 3,000m.
