Galicia’s liveliest city, La Coruña or A Coruña
depending on whether you speak Castilian or Gallego, is located
in the north-west of the province on the Gulf of Ártabro.
It’s spread out on its own peninsula facing the Atlantic and
has beautiful wide beaches. The town has grown up around a natural
harbour along the Avenida de la Marina, from where the splendid
white balconies covered in with glass, that give the town its nickname
of “Crystal City”, can be best admired. On a summer’s
evening the bars in the area around the Rúa Franja and the
Praza María Pita keep going all night, and the visitors all
go down to the harbour in the morning to watch the day’s catch
being brought in and auctioned off by the town’s fishermen.
There's no better place to try the local speciality of pulpo (octopus)
and other delicious Galician dishes on the thriving tapas scene.
La Coruña provides an ideal base to explore some, or all,
of the famous pilgrimage to Compostela, and to also learn about
the history, legend and art of this unforgettable experience. |
