As a tourist destination, Uruguay is much lesser frequented than its South American counterparts. Yet this is surely only to the advantage of those who do visit. Situated just across the water from Argentina, it is arguably equally attractive in terms of its colonial cities, magnificent beaches, succulent steaks and favourable exchange rate. Being the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America also acts in its favour as, away from its lively cities, you don't have far to go to immerse yourself in the real cowboy - or gaucho - country of its interior. Its friendly inhabitants, most of whom are of European descent, will make you feel incredibly welcome too.
