A bustling city of culture and commerce, Rouen is the capital of Normandy and home to the fifth-largest port in France. It is home to one of France’s most famous gothic cathedrals, and is also well-known for its prestigious list of former inhabitants, including Joan of Arc, Flaubert, Monet and Corneille. Rouen is a historic city that was once among the most prosperous in Europe, but that has also survived some very turbulent times – most recently World War II when large parts of the city were destroyed. In the last 60 years, much of the city has been restored to its former glory though, and the medieval old quarter is now particularly impressive.
